. >> thank you. first of all, on the debt ceiling issue. ii think that people remember te summer of 2011, you have lots of house republicans who are threatening not to increase the debt ceiling, which means the united states would default on its obligations. it is important to understand what the debt ceiling is all about. just to provide the ability to pay for bills and obligations already o. wayne, already owing under the law. if the federal government were to wake up and decide not to pay those bills, it would be like any of us getting up after having gone on about things on a credit card and say we've got those things, but we're not going to pay for them. in every sense those obligations has been voted on previously by congress over the years, which is why people say so clearly, don't mess around with the public debt in the u.s. senate because he would have a negative impact on our economy and the world economy. tom mentioned that nobody is suggesting we not pay the public debt. that qualification is important here because earlier the numbers used for the u.s. over $16 trillion, which was the entire data. the public debt i

, the automatic spending cuts agreed to in the debt ceiling deal of 2011 and make radical across the board cuts to the pentagon and spending. and the republicans decided that's the only leverage they have over obama to make real cuts in spending, which the administration has shown no inclination to do. i think what obama wants to do is to go out as one indicated, campaign in the country against the republican position. and i think he'll try to portray the republicans as he did in the campaign as protecting the rich, protecting the tax loopholes that the the rich have, the big corporations and be willing to cut from medicare, food stamps, et cetera. so his position is i represent the people, they represent ideology. i represent the folks and they he represent the rich. and he won the election on that kind of argument. he won on the fiscal cliff, on that kind of argument. if he came out to win the next round on the sequester, i think he will have weaken and fractured the republican house in a way that will clear the way to his being the dominant actor in washington for the next term and completed the agenda he started in years one and two that the repub

check with what has gone through the house today, we had a debt ceiling crisis. did you hear us go to the brink, or did you watch the house and the republicans take the lead and move that beyond and put the focus on to the budget? when you talk today about sequestration, what the president talked about, that's what was the president's idea in the last debt ceiling. one thing i will say is the most important thing we need to do is end the uncertainty, end the crisis prks but what you have to do is deal with those issues early. that's why the house, last term, passed two bills that dealt with sequestration. the senate did nothing. now we're coming up to the deadline, and now people are creating a crisis. if you want to focus on something, you should plan to the future. and if we haven't had a budget come out of the senate in the last three years, and what i think is most ironic, you've got tim cook, ceo of apple, sitting up with the first lady. the last time the senate democrats passed a budget, the ipad wasn't even introduced yet. so yeah. i would do the first priorities and planning in a budget would be the best thing to end a lot of crises. >> s
